Susan Ssun

The artist’s journey

Susan Ssun's journey began amidst the pristine natural beauty of BC’s Sunshine Coast, where she was raised in a bustling household led by her single mother and surrounded by seven siblings. Despite facing financial hardships and (at times) domestic distress, Susan's upbringing was anchored in the unwavering love and spiritual guidance of her mother.

Her formative years coincided with the zenith of American Folk music and the influx of Vietnam War draft dodgers seeking refuge along the Canadian West Coast. These transformative cultural currents, marked by a quest for freedom, peace, and harmony with the land, deeply influenced Susan's evolving artistic vision and personal ideology.

Venturing to Saskatchewan in her later years, Susan found herself captivated by the rugged landscape, vibrant communities, and rich narratives woven into the fabric of the province. It was here, amidst the urban tapestry of Regina, that she founded the band "Atticus Finch," swiftly establishing itself as a local favourite. Soon after, Susan co-founded the singer-songwriter duo "Shady Day" alongside Jori Cachene laying the groundwork for her debut album, "Singing for the Birds."

You could say that “music is in her blood”, as she comes from a long line of accomplished musicians, the most notable, Robin Roy Hatchard, who was inducted into the BC Country Music Hall of Fame in the 1990’s.  While her familial roots run deep in musical tradition, Susan's artistic palette is enriched by a diverse array of influences spanning generations. Her early influences have been recording artists and songwriters such as; Gillian Welsh, The Indigo Girls, Roy Forbes, Ron Sexsmith, Ray LaMontagne, Joni Mitchell, Hank Williams Sr., and Willie Nelson.  More recent influences include; Nick Drake, Alice Phoebe Lou, Ora Cogan, Espanalza Spalding, and Ganavya.

In 2008 Susan returned to the West Coast bringing with her a fresh perspective and a renewed commitment to her craft. Her music, infused with a contemporary flair, serves as a testament to her enduring bond with the natural world and her pursuit to amplify its significance. With each composition, Susan effortlessly channels the unique spirit of her surroundings, forging an intimate connection between her artistry and the landscapes that inspire it.
