“All night long, we can hear the sirens.
Somewhere, someone is living or dying.”

These are the opening lines of my new single, “Silver Town”.

The song was inspired after I witnessed a young couple, in downtown Vancouver, holding on to each other in the midst of a blur of urban chaos, and harsh, unrelenting sounds of traffic, voices & sirens.

As they held each other, their figures merged to form (what I would call) a small “island” - an “oasis” apart from the noise, and chaotic activity. They appeared to be completely immersed in their shared union of safety, love and hope - and to somehow “rise” above all the rest.

Later, I found myself standing beside my husband’s hospital bed, holding his hand as he rested after just having suffered a life-altering stroke.

In the dark room, we held each other amidst the plastic tubing, monitors, and endless stream of busy shuffling just outside the door - our lives having come to an abrupt halt.

During the night I turned to look out the window, and could see the lights of the city reflecting off the glass & steel towers of downtown. I could hear the sounds of heavy traffic, and off in the distance, a faint siren approached quickly. I thought about the person in that approaching ambulance, and wondered, “Were they about to be born, or were they about to die?”.

Somehow the idea of the endless cycle of birth & death, was captured by the cityscape’s incessant movement of lights, sounds, and activity.

As we held each other all night long behind the curtains drawn round the hospital bed, our two shadows merged as one on the striped cloth, and like the young couple seen earlier, we also became like a small Island oasis of safety, love and hope - rising above it all.

“Silver Town” is my new favourite, and I can’t wait to share it with you!
